In 1996, women activists from East Africa joined hands to form the Eastern African Sub-Regional Support Initiative for the Advancement of Women (EASSI).
It works with 16 women’s network organizations in eight countries and has 10 individual members who subscribe to its mission and vision of a society where all enjoy gender equality, access to justice and peaceful coexistence. Currently, EASSI works in 8 countries: Burundi, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania.
